MOTHERING AND THE FEMALE STRESS SYNDROME: SAGGING SUPPORT SYSTEM

Although kitchen technology has freed the homemaker from hours of physical labor, progress has created problems too. Harriet's experiences are common.

Harriet left the small Ohio town where she had grown up to attend Boston University in Massachusetts. Through her new roommate, she was introduced to Alex, a New Yorker attending Harvard Business School. They dated through his remaining two years at Harvard and then married. Alex became an account executive for a national corporation and was asked to locate in Atlanta, Georgia. Within thirty-two months of leaving her home, Harriet had moved, married, moved again, and suspended her education, and was now pregnant. She did part-time work during her pregnancy in order to save a little extra money for baby costs and found little time to meet her new neighbors or continue her education. By the time the baby arrived, Harriet was feeling alone and stressed.

Separated from her extended family and hometown, Harriet was separated from an important mothering support system. Years ago, motherhood was shared by many generations, and a new mother was helped by her own mother and even her grandmother. Now, however, families are usually split into units small enough to move to locations that offer jobs.

Instead of turning to her mother and grandmother for advice, today's mobile young homemaker must turn to the "experts." Unfortunately, when she does, she gets too much information. "How to" books are everywhere. Child experts speak from car radios, television sets, and cassette tapes and write newspaper columns and magazine features.

The mass media have replaced grandmother! But whereas grandmother's advice was consistent, today's myriad experts offer myriad opinions. The young mother is soon completely confused, lacking the traditional support system.
